Statement regarding the ongoing situation in Punjab, India

March 20, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Winnipeg, MB – The recent decision by the government of Punjab to shut down mobile internet and SMS services has shocked and disturbed the world for its direct impact on human rights and civil liberties. These actions by the government of Punjab were in response to the expression of displeasure by youth Sikh activists with government policies.

The government's actions are a clear violation of human rights and civil liberties. It has caused significant concern among Manitobans with family and loved ones in Punjab. Many are worried about their safety and well-being due to the shutdown of essential communication channels, such as mobile internet access. This time of year is very busy for Manitobans and other Canadians travelling to visit Punjab.

The right to freedom of expression and access to information is a fundamental human right that must be protected. The actions of the government of Punjab are not only a violation of this right but also go against the principles of democracy and the rule of law. For many Manitobans this type of action by the state brings back painful memories of the 1980’s and 1990’s when such actions were commonplace in Punjab.

We urge the Punjab government to immediately lift the shutdown of mobile internet and SMS services and respect its citizens' human rights and civil liberties. We call on the government of Canada to speak out against this blatant violation of human rights and to put pressure on their Indian government counterparts to ensure that such actions are not repeated in the future.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Punjab and their right to freedom of expression and access to information. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and bring awareness to the ongoing events in Punjab to ensure that human rights and civil liberties are protected.
